The seaport of Emden is the third largest North Sea port and at the same time Germany’s western-most seaport, located at the north bank of the Ems, approximately 38 sea miles southeast of the Ems river mouth at the North Sea. Vessels with a draught of 8.10 m (in the future 9.10 m) can reach the port at all times; tide-dependent the maximum draught is 10.70 m and will be 11.70 m in the future. Emden is a modern and highly-efficient universal port with excellent future prospects. The port consists of two parts, the tidal open outer harbour and the non-tidal inner harbour. The inner harbour can be accessed via two locks. The Big Sea Lock which operates around the clock has a lock chamber with 260 m length, 40 m width and a depth of 11,76 m. The slightly smaller Nesserlander Lock is mainly serving the inland waterway transport. In the past 25 years the port of Emden has evolved into one of the most important Ro-Ro ports, with 7 Ro-Ro berths and a powerful Ro-Ro ramp.
